We chose Ama Waterways for our 25th Anniversary cruise and we were not disappointed. From the moment we stepped onto the pier in Amsterdam until we said goodbye in Basel, everything was done for our comfort and enjoyment. The ship is tastefully appointed and sparkling clean, despite it's *relative* age in the industry (built in 2008). Our stateroom was stylish and comfortable, with plenty of space for our belongings and nice features such as a French balcony and flat-screen TV with internet access. Meals were freshly prepared (we saw fresh produce come aboard at every port of call) and portions were just right. The shore excursions were informative and featured different ability groupings so that all passengers could enjoy the sights as their mobility level allowed. Where Ama Waterways truly stands out, however, is in the professionalism and attentiveness of the crew. Everyone from the Captain and Cruise Director, to the wait staff and housekeepers, worked to make the cruise a wonderful, memorable experience for all passengers. I would not hesitate to recommend Ama Waterways to anyone who wants a truly first-class cruise vacation. Read Less

I had never before been out of my country, but had promised my father that someday I would visit Germany. He fell in love with the people and country side during WW 2. Last year, 2014, I received an email explaining the Viking adventure, and decided to go for it. We met the Mani in Amsterdam, July 2015, and cruised on the Rhine. I have to admit we hated the flights but it was all worth it. The excursions were well planned and so exciting. When we returned to our boat we were met with cold towels or fresh drinks and there was always cold water to have before, during and after. During meals we were greeted by name and the staff acted like they were just there for us. Food was fantastic and the wine was always wonderful. We met so many wonderful people and have remained in communication with several couples We have shared our experience with everyone who will give us five minutes. Our pictures, souviniers ,flash drive and memories will last a life time. But, we hope to add to those with another cruise soon, but only with Viking. Read Less

From start to finish, I can't say enough about everything. Excellent food, company, excursions, tour guides, cabins, entertainment director (Nick), and service. We left from Amsterdam and stayed two extra days before we left on our cruise, and Hilton was by far one of the most beautiful hotels to stay at (right along the canal). Was very hot the whole trip, so was grateful for the a/c. The travel from the hotel to the boat was on time, and excellent driver and vehicle. We were greeted by friendly, informative staff, and taken to our cabin directly. The cabin was clean, and well laid out for a small cabin. But over the week, it was plenty big enough. The showers were always hot, and always clean towels, and cabin staff were very helpful with anything we asked. The activities, excursions, on and off the ship were on time, and very well run. Great pick of excursions, and we had a few more to pick from when we boarded, so took advantage of a few more. Tour guides were very informative, and very good with their knowledge, and added humor a lot of the time. Disembarking was on time, and ride to Lucerne was quick, and there were a few couples coming along from ship, so very nice to continue on with people we met on the ship. My only complaint would be the Hotel we stayed in in Lucerne, could have been better. Noisy, we had to ask for hand towels, very noisy at night, and some staff didn't speak English (room staff). Flights were on time, and Swiss Air, was great, but too cool, and ended up with cold the next day after returning to Canada. Read Less

Having only previously only been on a sea cruise which we did not enjoy due to bad weather, too many guests, too much vibration from the engine etc., we joined the Viking Sun with an open mind. The travel to the port was very well organized, without undue delays, which gave a good start to our holiday. When we got onboard, from the word go, we received a warm welcome which continued throughout the cruise. When I booked this cruise, I asked for an upgrade if a cabin became available and fortunately one came available after the first night. Without this upgrade we would have been disappointed with the D Stateroom that we initially booked. With only around 180 guests, this made is much easier to meet people and get around the ship. We enjoyed the excursions and the flexibility of having additional excursions, which we did take up. It was also helpful to have the choice when to return back to the ship during the 'city visits'. The friendly service we received at 'meal times' was excellent continued during the week, the entertainment was good but would have appreciated more variety. We enjoyed the cruise very much, the disembarkation was very well organized. Just one problem to end with, was having to change at Paris Airport in the short time available following a delay in the flight from Basel Airport. It took about an hour to get to the correct terminal, just in time. We enjoyed the cruise so much, so we have already booked next year for the Romantic Danube cruise. Read Less

Absolutely Awsome river cruise on the Rhine River at the end of June. We've travelled the world on many ocean cruises and decided to try a river cruise. Choice of companies was many but we are absolutely delighted to have discovered Emerald Waterways. What a great company, shiny new ships, outstanding staff and very interesting tours and experiences. Clearly the new kid on the block and they are trying very hard to impress and that they did. From the captain to the cruise director to the servers and housekeeping staff, all were very professional and brought a can do attitude to their job and the passengers comforts. Our Chef was excellent, with very creative meal selections served in a leisurely fashion allowing for wonderful interaction with with new found friends from across the globe. If we had to point to only one staff member that best represented the crew it would be "Alexandra", a young hostess/server who greeted everyone with an infectious smile and a level of service that belies her young age. A medical emergency with one of our passengers in mid cruise was handled expeditiously, professionally and in a very timely manner by the crew and land based emergency services which gave us an even greater sense of comfort in the emphasis that Emerald Waterways places on its passanger's safety and security. All in all, we would say without hesitation that Emerald Waterways is well on the way to becoming the Gold Standard by which all other River cruise companies will be judged. Beverly/Jerry Read Less

This was only the third time out for the lovely new Emerald Dawn and maybe this means that the staff were trying harder than normal, or maybe this is the norm? Anyway they were truly excellent. From the cases being delivered to our suite, to a fabulous chambermaid, Dana, to polite, professional front of house staff to well trained and thoughtful waiters, this felt like we were in a moving 5 star hotel. OK we had opted to stay in the more expensive Owners Suite but the overall quality of the boat was simply excellent. Breakfast and lunches were buffets with a wide range of choice and the evening meals, again wide choice, were superb. We really liked the size of the river cruise boats and certainly would not consider one of the big Ocean going cruises. It was lovely to moor right in the middle of town, in Cologne we were 5 minutes from the beautiful Catherdral. Late one night I wandered down to the pool to catch the last half hour of the film Some like it hot, I settled into one of the comfy chairs and within minutes a member of staff brought me a tub of freshly popped popcorn. That's the kind of service I like. Read Less

Our 15 day Viking River Cruise was both a joy and a heartbreak. The trip was unfortunately hit by the failure of one of the main engines. We were told about this breakdown the first day. We were kept appraised of the problem and the corrective action plan on a daily basis. The plan was to have the trip proceed as normal for the first ten days and then we would all leave the boat and proceed the last five days on land. The first ten days: This part of the trip was a complete joy. The accommodations were excellent, the cabin staff were well trained and performed their duties to the letter with a smile and cheerful attitude. On the boat the food and food service was without fault. We enjoyed every meal. And we enjoyed the boat's crew. Off the boat the accommodations were okay but not as good as the boat. The travel by bus was very uncomfortable and not what we paid for. Off the boat meals were less than even 2nd class. Poorly prepared and poorly served. The "Rating" points listed and filled out below apply to the time on the boat only. Read Less

In short there was no fault to be found with anything. The evening entertainment was good though not always to ever bodies taste which is not unusual. The food was very good with a wide choice at all meals and the speciality nights were interesting. The ship was clean and comfortable even though it is was one of the oldest in the fleet and the crew we came into contact with were friendly and good at their particular jobs from the Catain to the stateroom housekeeper. We participated in most of the onshore excursions and found them interesting with the guides knowlegible and informative. We especially enjoyed the quiz night - possible because we came second?!! First and Worst Problem , we were to meet the ship in amsterdam for the cruise to basel. Our itinerary gave us 2 phone numbers, one for the ship and one for the london office. So that we could find out where the ship was docked. Myself and our hotel concierge telephoned the ship nine times and got no response, on the last occasion the telephone was picked up and replaced on the cradle without being answered .eventually found out where the ship was berthed by contacting the amsterdam harbour masters office. Not a good start to our first ever cruise.several other passengers had the same experience, some of them from as far afield as canada and the usa.we were all worried sick that the ship would leave without us. I have written to viking head office but they can only give excuses, no explanation as to why the phones were not answered and that includes their london head office!! Be very wary of making your own travel arrangements with this company. Problem 2, Dining arrangements . Only one sitting for your evening meal 300 passengers all waiting to be fed at the same time.really reminded us of faulty towers, if the head waiter was asked about a certain dish and was unable to answer the question, you were ignored and you got that dish on the assumption that that was what you wanted. Supposedly wine provided with your meal, keep asking for a refill or you wont get one. Soon realized that if you wanted to sit with family or friends you had to get in the queue at the entrance to the dining room where staff were posted to stop you entering until the allotted time .Gratuities Viking give you a recommendation as to what you should be prepared to give, one example, the programme director, for the 8 day cruise amounts to 4,000 euros, nice work if you can get it !! Better than a salary. i am a great believer in tipping but only where i get good service over and above the norm. Which i have to say was the case with some of the on-board staff. ( but not many). so much for my rant let's look at the good things . Cabin , very nice as good as a 3 or 4 star hotel but the housekeeping was excellent ,we could not fault our maid, she was helpful, pleasant and above all kept our cabin spotless at all times. The ship fairly new, i believe, so should have been and was in good shape, food was fair , service was the problem.overall we were very disappointed with our first cruise, especially when friends told us they had done a 10 day cruise, basel-amsterdam-basel with a swiss line for half the price !! It pays to shop around. Most expensive is not always best . Read Less

This was a trip of a lifetime. We went with my brother and sister in law celebrating milestone birthdays for the both of them. We spent two great days in Amsterdam prior to the cruise. The guided tour was wonderful, very informative, and the city was just beautiful. The hotel was clean, staff friendly, and full of fun. From the moment we boarded the kvasir we felt welcomed and relaxed. We were impressed with the level of friendliness and capabilities of the staff. Where else are you welcomed aboard with a wet towel to freshen up and a glass of sparkling wine with a smile and welcome!? The cabins were clean with amazing views outside on our little deck where we could sit and take in the sights. Our cabin steward, mackayla, was amazing. The meals were fantastic. The quality of the food, which you could have as much as you wanted, was wonderful and I'm a food snob. The wait staff couldn't be more accommodating, friendly, personable, and fun. The tours were, for the most part, very well received. We saw and learned a great deal. There is a lot of walking, however, but they let you know that by indicating how much there is in the packet you receive outlining your entire cruise. Fascinating to be sitting at dinner, looking out the huge windows, seeing the sites along the way and participating in the locks. There were surprises along the way that we did not expect, like the Dutch tea, German night, the bar b q, the "shakes" served above deck, which by the way was awesome. Plenty of protected and unprotected lounge chairs, mini golf, shuffle board, viewing areas. Just a fantastic trip thanks to Viking. Read Less

It is with great pleasure that I share my opinion of a recent cruise aboard the Rhine River longboat, Kara. At age 70, I had never taken a cruise of any type. Fortunately for me, my wife, Amy, suggested a river cruise to celebrate a special wedding anniversary. Well, I am absolutely delighted to say that our Rhine River cruise will forever be a very special memory for both of us. From beginning to end, our experience with Viking was flawless and wonderful. When we arrived at dockside for boarding, smiling crew members appeared almost magically to open our taxi doors, help us out and take our bags. Then, we were warmly welcomed on board for a quick check-in and immediately shown to our room, which was attractive, immaculate and quite comfortable. Our longboat, Kara, was surprisingly beautiful and we quickly began to feel right at home with her. Something that was truly amazing to me was how smoothly and gracefully she moved us alone the Rhine. I can honestly say that for the entire time we were on board, I never perceived movement. If it weren't for the magnificent scenery we were passing, you could have convinced me that we were stationary. Because passengers were invited to tour the wheelhouse, I know that Kara is equipped with the latest in technological navigation equipment. However, I am quite certain that her imperceptible movement was due in large part to the skillful guidance of Captain Thoralf Rössler. While Captain Rössler cruised us along the Rhine, Peter Burkhard, the hotel manager, saw to it that every other aspect of our stay on board went as smoothly as our ride. An added treat was to discover that Peter is an exceptional concert pianist when he demonstrated his remarkable talent during a cocktail party one evening. Aside from his management and musical skills, it is obvious that Peter hold's his Viking staff to a very high standard. Housekeeping was always quick and amazingly detailed, down to the arrangement of our toiletries and any other items left out. Additionally, whenever encountered, the housekeeping staff were very warm and always greeted us by name . . . exceptional in today's world. Add to Peter's management professionalism . . . the wit and charm of Program Director, René Van Loon and you have the formula for an extremely enjoyable experience. I am amused to tell you that my wife and I miss René's greetings and announcements over the public address system. We also miss his Elvis impersonation. Seriously, however, behind René's ability to amuse and entertain is an individual who is very astute and very skilled at what he does. I watched him as he organized and moved multiple groups on tours and excursions in multiple locations as we cruised. His organizational skills and attentiveness to passenger questions and needs are to be admired. I certainly don't have either the inclination or patience to do what René does so very well. The on-board cuisine offered by Chef Dimitar was uniquely delicious and the service in the dinning room was always attentive and top notch in every way. Maître ď Mirko saw to every detail and every passenger need. Because everything tasted so good and was so beautifully presented, my wife and I found ourselves looking forward to our next meal as soon as we left the table. One of the highlights of our many encounters with "Chef" and Mirko occurred the afternoon we were cruising the castle region. As if the scenery weren't pleasure enough, Chef and Mirko appeared with trays of raspberry sorbet in cups into which they generously poured champagne. Certainly, this was another unexpected treat enjoyed by everyone on deck. This review would not be complete without mention of our concierge, Tatiana. "Tatty" responded to every question and every need with sincere warmth and professionalism. Given the task of arranging end-of-trip transportation for our party of six to Zurich, she remained calm and perfectly unruffled even though we requested multiple changes to our schedule. Then, she personally saw to the loading of our luggage into the taxi at departure. Her presence on tours, excursions and at the Concierge Desk always gave us great comfort. There were none, but we knew that if there were a problem, Tatiana would resolve it for us. Finally, because they knew we were celebrating our anniversary, the dinning room staff surprised us one evening after dinner with a flaming dessert and a tableside serenade. When the gathered staff began to sing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" . . . their voices were a unique and charming blend. My wife smiled widely, obviously surprised and very pleased by the gesture. But, then, while I watched as she enjoyed what was occurring . . . tears began to trickle down her cheeks. Seeing her so touched and moved, touched me. What more is there to say? In addition to a wonderful cruise, unexpectedly, Viking and the crew of Kara had provided us with a very touching moment that Amy and I will remember for a very long time. I could easily continue for several paragraphs and mention many more names, like Martin and Lucien in the dinning room and Alan at the bar. Without exception, every crew member we encountered while on board Kara contributed to making our anniversary cruise a very special and unforgettable event . . . and we wanted you to hear that from us. In my opinion, the executive management team of Viking Cruises is to be commended for the training that created this very special team of men and women. If you are considering a Viking cruise, I encourage you to take it and . . . I wish you the amazing experience that we enjoyed. Read Less

It is difficult to specifically identify a particular aspect of the cruise that made the cruise excellent...it was a diffusion of many aspects. My wife suffers from acute Irritable Bowel Syndrome and usually "accommodates" the menu to minimise the impact but chef on the Skirnir was determined to ensure the food served to my wife had no impact on her at all. He took time from his busy schedule to meet one-on-one with my wife each morning after breakfast to discuss the day's evening menu and establish a "few deviations" that was a compromise of the excellent cuisine served on-board and what my wife's condition could handle. The bar and food staff were simply awesome...they were friendly, helpful, compassionate, lovable, entertaining, ..... just fantastic. Nothing was a problem and a problem was nothing. Our cabin attendant, Archie, was always ready to provide assistance with a cheery attitude. I have fallen into the mistake of mentioning specific personnel...this is a problem because everyone on-board who provided a service to us as quests were outstanding. For example, I am an Professional Electrical Engineer, and as such very interested in the workings of the cruise ship. I went to the main desk to see if I could arrange a walk through the engine room at some time during the 15 day cruise. The Chief Engineer was contacted immediately and within a few minutes he was showing me the workings of the vessel at the engine room level. My wife and I, as a result of our experiences on-board the Skirnir have been recommending Viking to anyone that has shown interest in taking a European river cruise. We will definitely traveling with Viking in the future. Read Less

We traveled on the new ship Viking Skirnir. What a lovely ship. We were treated at the gangway and introduced by the crew who took our cases on board and we checked in and they took our luggage to our room with us. This ship was its 6th trip. Our suite was just amazing with all the things we hoped for. We could not fault a thing. We toured around the top deck where they have a walking area and a golf area for putting,as well as a deck with lovely chairs and tables. We found the staff always willing to help if you needed it. They organised all our day trip activities with ease. We had Joey as our host for each day's planning he was funny but very professional. The entertainment was enough at night the paino player could play anything good dancing music. Our tours out each day were well planned and we had plenty of time to explore for ourself if we wanted to. The meals were lovely and the staff really looked after everyone. This river cruise is very different to a ocean cruise so do not expect a theatre for your entertainment. We all fitted in the dinning room at once for our meals, and the tables you could choose where ever you wanted to go t. From memory they were settings from 6-10. I think we had 196 on our ship. We could not fault the staff and the ship had everything we hoped for and more. For I think it was two days we could not use the top deck to sit out on as we had a lot of low bridges to go under, but there was seating on the 2nd and 3rd decks so it was not a problem. One must put up with this as the bridges are quiet low in places. Can not wait to do another cruise with Viking..I would suggest you start at Amsterdam and arrive at night time into Budapest the lights were stunning coming into Budapest. Almost all the folk were on top deck when we arrived into Budapest, camera flashing all around us. Read Less

Food was delicious, and the crew was attentive. The only disappointment was that on the Main river there were so many low bridges, the sundeck was closed for several days. We had a great cruise on Viking's new ship the Ve. The room was comfortable but a little tight. We had a small outside balcony which was adequate. The bathroom was small but very usable and the shower was great. Lighting was excellent in the room. Wifi was available in our room but was way too slow !! (satellite connection) TV was large and had decent programing including cameras in the ship. The food was good and plentiful but not very creative and rather bland to the taste. Unfortunately the only drinks that were part of the all inclusive package was WITH the meals. (pretty chincy) The shore trips were all very nice and "adequate". The use of what they call a quiet box was fantastic for the shore trips. There were numerous extra cost shore trip options. Fair amount of free time to explore on your own. We felt that the 14 day trip that spent a lot of time in Germany was just a lot of seeing the same things. All our stops were picture perfect but became monotonous! One stop in Germany for this type of trip would have been enough !! Our program director Kane was excellent and made the trip better than expected. Everybody on the crew was very friendly, gracious and helpful. I was very impressed by the consistency of their training. Too many old folks as guests though not enough of an age mix. Read Less

I must point out that we are not reviewing this trip as experienced conventional cruise travellers. A conventional sea cruise on a large ship with "entertainment", long periods at sea, crowds etc is the nearest thing to hell on holiday that we could imagine. We booked this first cruise because we wanted to spend sample time at the advertised destinations, and with that objective in mind Emerald came out a clear winner on price and facilities, in particular the contemporary design of the ships which we saw as a refreshing alternative to the very conventional and crusty looking competition. We hoped that the service offered matched the design i.e. was highly competent, stylish and customer oriented, without being fawning. Our holiday tastes are luxury without pretension, with first rate service and good value. Our cruise was the Amsterdam to Budapest "Splendours of Europe" cruise over 15 nights. I won't cover the itinerary - it is on the Emerald web site in full detail. Suffice to say there were interesting off-ship opportunities every day, sometimes several, all included in the price. On some days there were additional longer trips for an extra charge. We took several of these, and they were excellent and good value for money. The accommodation was, to a confirmed 4/5 star hotel traveller (accommodation/service based, not pretention/frilly curtains based), quite simply excellent. Contemporary, stylish, very comfortable, very well designed, and in perfect condition. We were lucky enough to be able to afford one of the 4 top-level suites, but all that gave us was extra space and some extra inclusive services - the facilities were the same in every room that we saw. Our ship was the Emerald Sun, on its second cruise (new carpet smell!), but all four ships appear to be the same. I won't list the excellent facilities - again they are on the Emerald web site. Maintenance was excellent - we could observe constant maintenance, and contrasted the results several times with the competitors' ships which we saw, some at very close quarters. But the highest point was the staff. Quite simply exceptionally good. Highly professional, excellently trained, cheerful and friendly at all times, always there to help but never intrusive, and efficient to a high degree. You can see from my other reviews that I am critical of anything less that the highest service levels (again, based on service and not pretention), but this group were a cut above the best I have seen anywhere - congratulations to the Emerald trainers and managers. River cruising seems to be expensive compared to sea cruising, due mainly I guess to scale. Looking after 160 customers with just under 50 staff is not cheap, and use of the Rhine and Danube facilities cannot be cheap either. But if you want a truly memorable blow-out holiday in Europe, Emerald seems to us to be the way to go. We are hoping to do another Emerald cruise soon. Read Less

We flew in 2 days early to Amsterdam and had a wonderful hotel and a very informative tour around Amsterdam as well as some special shopping trips and gallery visits before leaving to board Viking Mimir. From the moment we boarded Viking Mimir I knew it was going to be something I would remember for the rest of my life. Not only was our cabin & staff excellent in everything they did. All the extra things the staff did like turning down our bed at night made the dream a reality. The meals were fantastic and always lots of choices. The tours were beyond anything I could have imagined. Just right amount of time and very informative. All the little extras that were brought on board the ship for our entertainment exceeded my expectations. There was never a dull moment from glass blowing, to opera singing and games and especially the daily briefing for the next day. The weather was just perfect and when we didn't have a tour just sitting up on the top deck to take in the scenery was most wonderful. We met a lot of wonderful people and so our meals were full of exchanging names, and many many things to chat about. We have a lot of picture to remember this special trip as this was our first cruise ever. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see Europe in this way. Read Less

The river cruise was the first part of a multi-week vacation to Europe. After being greeted at the airport by a friendly and new face, we started the adventure. Much to our surprise, our first day included a walking tour of Amsterdam and lunch on board. From that point things just got better. Wonderful meals, great tours and lots of time to adventure at all of the stops along the way. the tours were well planned and the time given at each stop were great. We enjoyed many times on and off the ship at the many ports of call. The cabin was comfortable, well laid out and very clean. Each day we received many wonderful services form the small and friendly staff. By the end of the week we came to know many of the staff. We looked forward each evening after supper for the newsletter outlining the activities of the next day. The presentations on the areas we visited were very good. The local tour guides gave an informed and entertaining experience. Being on such a quality ship, with the newest of amenities was great. Arrivals and departures at each port were seamless. Getting on the road for the tours was efficient. Our departure , though bitter sweet was quick and painless. In summary we are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise Read Less

Great guides at each of the tours. Beautiful scenery and cities. We enjoyed the whole experience. The service was excellent. We did nearly all the optional tours and thoroughly enjoyed them all. The ship itself is beautiful, clean, and well maintained. The staff and crew were very professional and friendly. We extended our cruise in Lucerne and went on the Mt. Titlis tour which was awesome.
