Back yesterday from 14 glorious nights on the Viking Baldur/ and Magni. It was our very first cruise ever..to celebrate my retirement and our 30th Anniversary. We arrived in Amsterdam late as the airport was fogged in...regret we didn't get a chance to see the city at all. But nor regrets after that! Can't say enough about the crew and staff...our Hotel manager Jens was fabulous as was Claus, our Tour Director. The chef and wait staff were outstanding. A special shout out to Jackson and Pamela who took such care of our table every night!!!! We knew going in that the water levels were quite low but Viking was hoping that our cruise would be the first all season to make it all the way through to Budapest. Unfortunately that was not to be. We eventually had to repack and were bused to Nuremburg to pick up the new ship-the Viking Magni. However, it was a seamless transfer and Viking handled everything so smoothly! Each day brought new delights! the tours were very well orchestrated and we never had an overly large tour group. The guides were very well versed. The cathedrals, castles, monasteries and fortresses were all amazing. The highlight was a Concert in Vienna! Sailing into Budapest at night was spectacular! It is not to be missed! The food was plentiful and absolutely delicious. The Chefs on both ships were so talented. As a non-meat eater I was pleased that there were vegetarian entrees at both lunch and dinner. If I wanted something different it was no problem. We met so many wonderful people on board as well...The dinner is open seating but we managed to sit each night with 3 couple we met the first night. What fun we had! Be prepared to eat and drink...many times a day! Even some special afternoon treats some days! If you are debating whether to take this cruise -do it! You will have a lifetime of memories! Read Less

Have to admit this was our first cruise of any kind. We had a fantastic time on the Baldur!! the crew was amazing. Jens, the Hotel manager was always available. The crew was friendly and very obliging. A special shout out to Jackson and Pamela for taking such good care of us in the Dining Room each night! Out Tour Director was Claus...who came in as a last minute replacement. He was so knowledgeable and has the patience of a saint! Low river levels continued along the Danube. we knew beforehand that it was a possibility that we would have to change ships due to this problem. Unfortunately we did...but the change over was seamless. Viking handled everything and we entered into the Viking Magni through crew members shouting hello! Of course no one wanted to have to repack but it could not be helped. Viking had no control over this situation. As a special treat Viking paid for all the guests to attend the Vienna Symphony concert...what a lovely night that was! Each port along the way was beautiful! The guides- for the most part- were very nice and had an amazing amount of knowledge about the cities and towns. Some days we had a guided tour in the morning and then the afternoon free to explore on your own. My husband and I especially enjoyed this aspect. Even with the transfer to the Magni we went to all the places listed in the original itinerary. The cabin, though small, was comfortable. Large bed...delightful! Bathroom was small but efficient. Now the food...unreal! Both ships had Chefs that were outstanding and very willing to make anything special. I do not eat much meat and every night there was a vegetarian meal available..including the appetizer! One evening, Chef George on the Magni, made me a special appetizer! The table of 8 with whom we ate was over the moon with the food! The breakfast buffet was endless...Lunch could be eaten in the Dining Room or up in the Lounge.. The view of Budapest at night was stunning...a definite must see! Our flight back to NY through Muncih was leaving at 6AM.. Viking had us on the bus by 3;30..after giving us breakfast! My husband and I would not hesitate to cruise with Viking again. In fact we look forward to it! It was worth every penny! Read Less

2015 saw our first river cruise of what promises to be many. My wife and I had probably the best vacation that we have ever had. We had previously experienced Ocean cruises but we found this to be the most relaxing and most enjoyable ever. We made some new friends on the 1st day, who we spent most of the 14 days with. Our trip was unfortunately split between 2 longships, the Baldur and the Magni. The reason for this was the low water level on the Danube. We were warned ahead of the trip that this might happen. However this in no way dramatically altered our overall review of this trip. Both Embarkation and Disembarkation were seamless. All staff were very helpful and considerate to our needs. The cabin was extremely well appointed and maintained very well on a daily basis. All of the staff on board were fabulous and very attentive to our needs. Our hotel manager Jens and Tour director Claus were very patient and incredible. The dining room staff and chef were outstanding. In fact the overall review of Viking's organization and attention to detail in caring for everyone on board was first class. All excursions in the ports along the way were beautiful! The tour guides were very nice and very knowledgeable about the cities and towns and their history. The freedom to explore on our own was appreciated and allowed us to investigate other interests. Even with the transfer to the Magni we went to all the places listed in the original itinerary. The onboard demonstrations and talks were very informative and enjoyable. Our first thoughts on arriving at our destination was "lets do it again". Several previous customers have indicated that Viking is a "Class Act" and both my wife and I have to agree. We loved this trip so much that we have booked a Portugal trip next March with 2 of the friends we made on this trip. Congratulations on an excellent organization. Read Less

We wanted to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday in a special way and we could not have asked for a better way to do so. The whole trip was AMAZING! From only having to unpack & pack once (ok, it was twice because of the low level of water in the Danube-but Viking can't control everything) while getting to visit interesting out of the way towns and attractions in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary was an absolute joy. The staffs on both river ships the Bragi and her sister ship Skadi made us feel right at home. They were quick to learn our preferences (such as having our ice bucket filled each morning) and fulfilling them without us having to prompt them. Our cruise director, Roos, was very knowledgable and charismatic, making this trip unforgettable . We had excellent daily tour guides that made each stop both informative and fun. The audio sets used by the guides allowed me to wander and linger behind our group to take the photographs that I wanted while not missing any of their knowledge or humor. The two weeks spent with Viking not only provided us with unforgetable memories but also new life long friendships. Upon our return, when I have been asked how our trip went, my consistent reply has been "If you can afford it, you should absolutely experience a Viking River Cruise." The only thing that I would change, if we were do it all over again, would be to extend our time in both Amsterdam and Budipest, but due to my work responsibilities, that was not possible. Read Less

The ship, dining hall, lounge, hallways, and cabins were always very clean. Everything in the cabins was well supplied. The staff were always friendly and very helpful. The food was excellently prepared and the staff were excellent in taking the menu requests and delivering the menu items requested. They were constantly waiting on us in refilling wine, water, tea, and other beverages. The program director and other chief staff were very knowledgeable and all daily activities were well planned. Day tours of the cities were well planned and the tour guides were very knowledgeable and very accommodating. While the ship cruised at night to the next destination, the travel was so smooth it was sometimes difficult to know we were actually moving. This river cruise was very enjoyable, the scenery was breathtaking, and the knowledge gained of the country sides traveled was inspiring. Disembarkation was also excellent since we were driven from the ship to the airport. We would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to know more about life in the countries along the Rhine and Danube. Read Less

The entire trip was just excellent. The cabins were nice, they were small, but that's to be expected on a boat. Everyone treated you as if you were royalty. The food was great. The tours were outstanding. I had a minor issue with the PA not working in my room which caused me to miss one excursion, but I got past that okay. My laundry was done fast and very professionally presented to me. The crew and the waiters were very nice. The waiters were fun, always joking, yet very professional. We had an issue where the river water was too low due to a summer drought. We had to pack up, and were bused 3 hours to an identical boat. Same cabin, same good service, same everything. We were friendly with the crew of the Engvi and were unsure of what might await us. I can't remember the name of the second boat, but the whole thing was done almost seamlessly. The boat's entertainment officer [Barry] was very talented, and always had everyone laughing. I told him I wanted to visit Scotland, and since he is Scottish, I thought he would be a good guy to talk to. He spent quite a while telling me what to see and where to go. He is one great guy. I would highly recommend Viking to anyone. Thank you for making my vacation memorable. Read Less

We very much enjoyed our first river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. We had beautiful weather for the entire cruise. We had rain for the two additional days we spent pre-trip in Amsterdam. We enjoyed the city and appreciated the very helpful hotel and Viking personnel. However, we did not care for the accommodation we had at the Moevenpick. The included breakfasts were great but the room and shower left a lot to be desired. The tours and tour guides were top notch on all the excursions. All were well informed and entertaining as well. All questions were answered and suggestions made for activities, shopping and restaurants. The only issue we had with the schedule was in Strasbourg where there was so little free time to see the city. We had booked the Alsace tour to the vineyard which was fabulous but that left us almost no time in the city. Perhaps, that included tour could be shortened or the Alsace tour scheduled later so there is at least 2-3 hours free time. Dining onboard was wonderful. Food was varied and delicious. Loved meeting the chef Jeff who was always smiling and greeted us several times with treats after returning from the excursions. He also gave us tips on how to make the little treats that were served coming on board. We were impressed with Vikings attention to detail and especially having a rep present to assist at the airport in Basel at just after 4:30 AM on departure day. We also had a good experience being met when we first arrived though we were probably the last ones due to a long wait for our luggage. We found the arrangements to our excursion destinations very well managed and comfortable. In summary, we are glad we took this trip and would do it again at some point. Read Less

Overall, everything was outstanding. We wanted to be catered to and pampered and this trip was just that. The "Mani" was a wonderful boat, very open, new and lots of natural light. Everything was taken care of with the exception of the optional excursions, which Viking took care of without any problems. Excursions were good but sometimes a little too much time walking. Would have liked more time just cruising. Staff was outstanding, very friendly and very accommodating. You might consider as an option in Luzern a daily excursion to Wengen. It's only a little more than an hour drive. Spectacular valley views and a magnificent view of the Swiss Alps (Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau!!!). Check it out, it's a beautiful place! We enjoyed the entertainment in the lounge. There was a good mix of music and talent and fun contests. The only criticism we have is that the food was mediocre. Breakfast was above average, lunch at the Aquavit Terrace was below expectations (food which should be hot or warm was usually cool to cold - not very appetizing). Dinner meals were overall good, sometimes better, sometimes less than expected. We heard these comments from others on previous cruises that maybe the food is less than expected because of the rapid expansion of the Viking cruise lines. We hope this is not the case. The pre and post packages (Amsterdam and Luzern) were good. Hotels were clean and spacious. The host at the hotel in Luzern could have been a little more helpful with our questions and requests. Because of our great first experience with Viking, we are booking another cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest on the Egil for next September. We hope that experience will be just as good, if not better! Read Less

Our first cruise, my wife and I did not know what to expect. However we were delighted with every aspect of the cruise from the ambiance, the food, the staff, the entertainment including the more cerebral opportunities such as the lecture on German history and about Bavarian history. The ports of call were great and the tour guide knowledge and courtesy were exceptional. The logistics caused by the disruption due to low water levels were handled with the minimum of fuss by the crew and staff, who were fantastic on both the Ve and the Gefjon. Booking was easy and all questions answered. The room was very comfortable and cleaned throughout the trip. All stops were organized with options offered. The food, drink, and service at every meal was wonderful. The selection was wide and varied with no time restrictions. We met and had great conversations with several of the cruise goers. The walking tour at each port was provided by expert people that pointed out the history and facts at every step. They were careful to keep the pace of the information and foot traffic relaxed. We were impressed that the buses picked everyone up and brought us to the towns and points of interest. The staff on all levels were well trained, friendly, and accommodating. The tour of the wheelhouse was interesting. The camera was put to use from day one, morning til night. The Viking Kara went by beautiful sites, towns, cities, windmills, and castles. The river is soothing and relaxing, the people interesting and friendly, and Viking made the whole trip memorable. We have plans for the next cruise in 2017. Read Less

We had not been back to Europe in 40 years, and we had never done a cruise of any kind. The Viking cruise on the Viking Hlin far surpassed any expectations we could have. It was literally the best vacation we have had. The ship was fantastic. The cabins were roomy enough for two to move around in easily; the furnishings were very nice and the veranda was much appreciated and much used. The staff were great, with special mention to our cabin steward, the captain and the maitre'd, not to take anything away from anyone else. Everyone bent over backwards to please and succeeded. The food was excellent. The wait staff was excellent. The tours were well planned and informative, and the four tour buses that followed the route of the ship and drove the tour groups was at once unexpected and appreciated. Cruised the "Rhine Getaway" with girlfriends for a fabulous experience. The ship was amazing, the food could not have been better and the staff attended to our every need! The city tours were well-organized with Viking's beautiful motor coaches. The audio boxes allowed us to hear the tour guides who were extremely knowledgable (especially Peter 2m in Cologne & Weibe at Kinderdijk). Daily briefings were great & entertainment enjoyable, On-board staff from the dining room: Vladitza, Kyle, Jerome, Christian, Tamas & Ceresela; Bar staff: Denecia & Cherie Lynn; Housekeeping: Michaela; ALL were absolutely AMAZING!!! Also kudos to Sharon, Sasha, Chef Mark & Arturo for all they did every day. Especially enjoyable was lunch on the Aquavit Terrace, the Wheelhouse tour and the German night dinner and entertainment. Disembarkation was smooth and organized. Our cabin was roomier than expected & I loved the heated floor in the bathroom. This was a very high quality experience and it exceeded my expectations. This was our first cruise of any kind and, overall, we were very happy. Because of low water conditions we were forced on two occasions to transit by bus, once to change vessels from Lofn to Vidar and once to hotel accomodation in Budapest. We found the guides on all shore excursions to be very knowledgable and quite entertaining. The crew of the Lofn was outstanding - service was excellent and very prompt, attentive and considerate. While the crew of the Vidar was good, there was a noticable drop off in service quality. The same can be said of the quality of the food - outstanding on the Lofn; materially less good on Vidar. All things considered, the arrangements for the transfer from Lofn to Vidar were handled very well. However, we were not happy with the hotel arrangements in Budapest. The hotel was located away from, and with no convenient access to, the city centre. Our luggage was misplaced. While a meal credit was provided for dinner in the hotel restaurant, the service was extraordinarily bad and we, along with several other guests from the cruise, eventually gave up and walked out. Other than the hotel bar, there were no other' dining' options. With luggage having to be made available in the hallway at 2 am and a 4 am departure for the airport, our stay in Budapest left us bored, hungry and exhausted. As a result of the foregoing, our ratings for the have been reduced from what would otherwise have been 'excellent' to 'average' to 'very good' in a number of categories. Read Less

This was a wonderful introduction cruise to so much of Europe. The guides were excellent and very informed of the area in which they guided. The food was outstanding every day! Cabins were perfect, clean and very well taken care of by the staff. An exercise room/area would have been welcomed. Though there is walking on the tours, it is not the same as a good workout. There were plenty of activities to select from or take some days off for down time, which we did or experience the towns on our own. So glad Viking was able to deal with the low water situation, thank you! Our embarkation was a little mixed up - Viking personnel did not show up at the airport pickup point - but our Cruise Director immediately responded and took care of our getting to the ship on time from the airport at no cost to us. All in all this was fabulous and we so enjoyed our trip and all that we experienced and the new friends we now have because of this cruise. Read Less

What a wonderful way to spend our first time on a Viking tour cruising down the Rhine. The crew was truly outstanding catering to our needs. We would begin the day having a delicious personal breakfast before our tour. Judy who individually made omelets would say sit down Miss Barbara and I will bring your vegetarian omelet to you. After a fantastic breakfast , we would begin one of the many tours with guides from each region who gave us an informative tour. Thus, we would return to the ship and have a light lunch buffet which we enjoyed on the sunny deck with the soup of the day etc. The piano player played wonderful songs during lunch and dinner. After lunch, we could go on another tour, sight see by ourselves or just stay on the ship and relax. The Captian and Engineer were very informative and gave tours of their areas. Each evening we dinned with gourmet meals and the pleasant company of other passengers which we met on the ship. One of the most fun times that we had was an optional typical German dinner and folkloric entertainment along the Rudesheim's lively Drosselgasse. We danced and sang the night away. We also enjoyed the scenic coach excursion through Germany's Black Forest. All the tours were worth while. We can not say enough about how friendly, helpful, and attentive the crew was to our needs. They were always willing to lend a helping hand, They even made embarking and disembarking the ship easy which was a real chore. On the top deck of the ship, were chairs to relax on , a walking deck, and a place to practice putting for golf which we loved and practiced daily. Great fun! Our first cruise. Was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to go from US to Europe. The transfers went smoothly. The cruise itself was fun, fun, fun. Cruise was above expectations. A small ship rather than a large one (190 guests) made the trip more romantic and easygoing. The ports of call were super and the ship was within easy walking distances to some of the sites (if you chose to walk rather than ride). The excursions were wonderful and the guides helpful. We read the booklet provided by Viking before we started and felt like we knew some of the places already. The cathedrals, castles, small towns provided a good mix of sites to see. Enjoyed the free time to explore the small shops and cafe's. Kuchen in Heidleberg, lunch at a café in Strasbourg were fun experiences. Shipboard food was excellent. Not a cheap trip but worth every penny. Bonus was spending a few hours in London on the way home. Read Less

This was our first time on a river cruise. We were with a group of 14. We really didn't know what to expect. I can honestly say we were not disappointed. The ship (Emerald Dawn) was brand new. Only on its 5th voyage. We really liked the intimate setting. About 120 passengers were on this cruise. We got to know just about everybody. The ship is small. Only three levels and about 440 feet long. The dining room, lounge and pubic areas are in the front (bow) of the ship. Pool and exercise area in the back (stern). Yes, there are only three public bathrooms (as mentioned by a previous poster), but they are right next to the dining room and lounge. You might have to walk back to your room, but I've had to walk further to go to the bathroom at a baseball stadium. Come on, it's only a couple hundred feet in one direction or another. ;) Breakfast and lunch was served buffet style and seating was open. We (and most others) still ended up seated with the same group at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner was served at 7:00 pm and served by the waiters. There was no "open seating" (A complaint made by a previous poster. Come on, really. There are only 120 - 160 people on the entire ship. It's not like you have 2000 people to feed.) The food was fresh and very good. At each port, fresh food, produce and beverages were brought on board. Watching them load the ship was interesting. They formed a "bucket brigade" and passed all the boxes down the gang plank. The garbage was taken off the ship using the same method, as was the luggage on and off the ship. The trips and tours were optional but included. Some were half a day, some a full day inclusive of lunch and one was the opportunity to be entertained by a local talent. The gym was very small. Two stationary bikes and one rowing machine. There is jogging track on the top level and plenty of deck chairs (no need to save one with a towel). Read Less

My husband and I recently experienced our first cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. We loved it, our room was spacious and I was able to unpack everything and store our suitcases under the bed. I think having a room away from the back of the boat was a bonus, we had room 201 and we were able to have our door open at all times when we were in the room. Our tour leader Katy was fantastic we worked tirelessly to ensure every detail went smoothly. The captain and staff were all first class both friendly and efficient. There were times when the river level was so low that it was thought we would have to bus to the next stop; but no our new Avalon boat managed to get through when some other cruise lines were not able to. Starting from Amsterdam the cruise is quite relaxed but as you reach the Danube there is much to see and sometimes we were doing two tours per day but that is optional. I felt the food was lovely, fresh fruit in the morning and we could request an omelet freshly cooked if you didn't want to eat the buffet breakfast. Lunchtime there was a light lunch option in the lounge upstairs and dinner I always enjoyed. We loved meeting and making new friends and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will most certainly book another cruise with Avalon. Read Less

There is absolutely nothing bad I can say about our cruise! The ship's staff was incredible! They were all very personable & really helped to make the cruise as wonderful as it was. An example of how great the staff was - we & our 6 new 'met on the cruise friends" were late getting to the dining room for the last night's dinner & there were not 8 seats available together. So it seemed like we wouldn't be able to enjoy our last cruise dinner together. When we told the staff, they set up our own space in the lounge area & brought our dinners to us. Definitely above & beyond & we all will never forget them for that! The food was beyond belief, from the breakfast buffet, with eggs cooked to order, to a gourmet dinner every night. We especially loved the taste of Germany night with the staff dressed in traditional garb with traditional food. Daily excursions were well organized & very informative. Overall, a very exceptional, memorable & delightful experience. We look forward to our next Viking cruise, which will be next year & another the following year. THANK YOU VIKING!! Read Less

Since this was our first river cruise, we didn't know exactly what to expect. The ship was very well appointed and comfortable. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and our activity director, Elizabeth, gave it her all. We had to change ships half way through the trip because of low water levels in the Danube. The transition was handled with very little inconvenience. The two ships we traveled on were identical which made it very easy. We were thankful that the cruise did not have to be cancelled because of mother nature. We had a great time on the excursions, saw wonderful things, and learned a lot from the knowledgeable guides. Some of our favorite excursions were the pub crawl, winery visit, and Lobkowicz Palace. We were so glad we extended our trip to include Prague. The only suggestion we would make would be not to have so many Viking groups touring the same place at the same time. It got very crowded a few times resulting in some groups trying to get ahead of others to enter venues first. The food was excellent and the dining experience very pleasurable because of the great service by the wait staff. The on-board entertainment was great fun. We have already booked our next Viking cruise which is the best recommendation we can give. Read Less

This trip was amazing! From the greeting and welcome at the dock to the final good-byes, the staff were professional, competent and well trained. We were so impressed by the organization of the trip. With Nick as the program director, the activities were fun, informative and very well executed. The quality of the local guides was a highlight of the tours along the cruise. Each one was extremely knowledgeable and provided insights that we could not have learned without their expertise. The food was outstanding! AS an individual who is unable to eat gluten, the staff shepherded me through every meal and always ensured that I had what I needed. The food was fresh, imaginative and always presented with flare. The wait staff were wonderful. We give Viking very high marks for our experience. Thanks to all on the staff for a great trip! Read Less

A wonderful experience, despite low water levels making completion by boat a little uncertain - but we got through when other, older boats didn't. The boat had Avalon's wonderful new cabins with whole room being integrated with the balcony - bliss to lie in bed and see the world drift by!. Excursions were excellent - relatively early (8.30-ish) starts for some of them meant that we got in to popular places well before the crowd, which made the experience more enjoyable and then left the afternoon free, very often, for exploring on our own (one of the advantages of river cruise boats berthing near town centres). Average age of those on board 50s to early 70s - we had a sense from comments by local guides that we might have been more mobile as a group than those from other boats, and the cruise director did arrange for those with hip and knee problems to go in a slower group which could travel difficult parts in a small 'train' contraptions, so they didn't feel they were slowing others down on hills and cobblestoned streets. Had a fantastic cruise director (Katy) who managed everyone with good humoured efficiency. The rest of the staff were also great cannot fault service and food. Only criticism (and not everyone would see it as a negative) was that evening meals were full service 4 course affairs lasting up to 2 hours which, as noise levels got up became very difficult for the hard of hearing - a buffet option similar to the lunches would have enabled a shorter meal (and more time to enjoy the beautiful evenings in contemplative mode!) We did this trip at the end of 3 weeks travelling alone and it was a relaxing way to finish a trip. Read Less
