Wanted to see some of Europe. This was an excellent choice. Value for cost is terrific. We stayed in lower level rooms and they were very comfortable with quite adequate room. I wouldn't bother paying extra to get a small balcony (in my opinion). Food is top notch, but we have no food allergies and are meat eaters. But there are vegetarian options if necessary. The staff is very considerate and helpful. Breakfast and lunch are buffet style while dinner is set. There's a choice of 2 appetizers, 2 soups, 3 entrees and 4 desserts. They also have the "Chefs Favourites" listed which is what the Chef recommends of the previously mentioned options. I went with the Chefs Favourites for all dinners and was not disappointed. They tried to pair the wine with area being travelled through, which was quite nice as well. There was an included excursion at each port and 2 where you had an option. On one of these the cost was extra, but we thought it was well worth it. It was the drive to Chochem. We did recommend on our survey of this excursion that we would have liked another 1/2 to hour of free time. Each stop has its unique features. The ship on/off procedure is well organized. All local tour guides were excellent and all spoke very good English as does the ship staff. The room steward did a a great job cleaning our room daily. Sarah, the entertainment director had evening entertainment of some sort planned but it's your choice to partake or not. The drink package selection could have more options but this isn't a big deal for us. As noted above, we had a great time and highly recommend this cruise. We will sail Emerald again. Read Less

I was interested in visiting the Rhine. Looked for a company and ship which had more activities whilst sailing. Emerald sun not only had a pool, cinema, gym, massage treatment but had an entertainment manager who organised yoga, pilates, zumba and other game shows to include all who wanted to join in. She also sang brilliantly and arranged disco nights. A couple of nights we were entertained by outside performers. A very varied and well organised entertainment plan. The restaurant was well run with very varied menu including all diets. They were very obliging whenever there was any type of foods you couldn't or didn't want to eat. They'd always find an alternative. Very attentive ensuring you always had a drink. Everyone served each course together and no hanging around between courses. Our rooms were very comfortable and clean. A laundry service was available at a reasonable cost. All the staff very friendly and efficient and always ready to make us laugh. I would definitely recommend emerald waterways Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary and the cost. Usually cruise Celebrity but the cost for this was less for equivalent sailing. Our status with Celebrity transferred over to Royal and was a great benefit for us. All the ports were great and crew was excellent. We only did two excursions and they were arranged privately. Did a tour in Tallin, Estonia and a 2 day tour in St. Petersburg, Russia. Other ports were Skagen and Copenhagen, Denmark; Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland. We began and ended in Amsterdam. For the ports - do your research. The transfers were expensive and not always necessary if you like to walk - and not always a long walk. Some of the areas were a short distance from the dock. The Brilliance was very shiny and new in most of the public areas. The Schooner Bar and Colony Club were very dark and reminiscent of an older type of ship decor. The cabins are in need of a redo. Food is very subjective. Meat ordered medium rare was usually overcooked and replaced. Other dishes were good and bad. I never went hungry! Read Less

This ship is a 5 star hotel and the service is fantastic. I also loved the app for your phone that alerted you to points of interest you sailed by, and that you could look up info on all the cities along the route. Also loved that fact that once you paid the fare everything was included, no surprises at the end of the cruise. Highly recommend Scenic Cruises! Embarkation and disembarkation was very organized and went smoothly. The ports of call and shore excursions were well organized and very interesting. I would have liked to have more than 1 day in Budapest and maybe 1 less day in Vienna. The entertainment was very good with a good variety and many special things only for Scenic like the classical music concert at Palais Liechtenstein, and the Salzburg Sound of Music Show. Our cruise director, Richard Grey, did an excellent job of organizing local talents to come on board to entertain us. Al in all I would highly recommend Scenic Tours and I plan to travel with them again. Read Less

Wanted to visit Amsterdam and Germany and it was the perfect way to do it. We chose the Scenic Ruby as the ship and decor was very modern. We had the room at the rear of the ship. The rear window was wide that we didn’t have to leave our room to see the beautiful river scenery especially the castles. The food and service was five star, all our needs were met by our wonderful butler with early morning coffee and breakfast in our room. There was a also a full buffet breakfast in the dining room with a great selection of cold and hot food. Evening meals were five star. The daily soups are to die for. As you cruise through the towns and past the vineyards you get to try the lovely wines and beers in that area with you meals. It seemed happy hour all day. The bar staff would were very attentive and ready to mix your favourite cocktails. The musical entertainment on board was excellent. There was a good selection of shore excursions. Our Cruise Director was informative advising us of the next days’ tours and departure times. Comfortable coaches and guides were ready each day to take us on our guided tours. This was certainly a five star cruise. Read Less

Arrived in Amsterdam a day early to walk around and adjust to the time change. That worked well, but not enough time to do Amsterdam justice. The cruise far exceeded our expectations. The cabin was comfortable and always clean, the cabin arrangement was great and you could wake up in the morning a watch the country-side go by. The staff was always looking to help, whether answering questions, arranging for extra side trips or just getting another drink, they were always very helpful and friendly. The food was wonderful with a varied menu, always including fish, meat, poultry and vegetarian selections everyday. The chef made it very clear that if you wanted another dinner, or more of anything all you had to do was ask, be careful here; even having what was served resulted in a number of pounds by trips end. The off ship excursions were fantastic; the guides were very knowledgeable, informative and personable, with great stories along the way. This cruise had been on our bucket list for quite a while so we were finally going to experience it. After spending 3 fabulous days in Paris, we chose to add this extension along with a 3 day extension at the end of the cruise to Prague, we got on the "fast" train which was to take us to Amsterdam to board our ship. The train broke down & we were given numerous different excuses as to why & even our tour guide from Scenic couldn't get a straight answer. What a great start to a cruise down the river. As a result we were 3hrs late arriving to the ship which put our plans for exploring Amsterdam out the window. Our ship Cruise Director did make us feel very welcome though when we did eventually arrive. We were on the Scenic Opal ship. Our cabin was very spacious & had all the amenities that we needed. We had a balcony suite. Very, very limited entertainment on board. Aprox 1hr maybe every 3 days. Only one dinning room every evening to go to & you had to dress appropriately. Nil activities to do whilst sailing down the river. As the ship had to pass under some low bridges during the trip the sun deck was unavailable for 5 days for the passengers. This meant we were stuck inside all this time when the ship was sailing. This was never mentioned to us that this was going to occur when we booked the trip. When we eventually reached a port there was very limited time on shore. Aprox 3-4 hrs for shore excursions. Not enough time at all. Too much time is spent sailing down the river with nothing to do on the ship. On a couple of our elective tours we were not informed until we were at that particular palace/church etc that we couldn't take photos inside. This was not mentioned to us when we booked the cruise or by the Tour Director on the ship. If it had we may have made a different choice beforehand. The service on the ship was terrific. The bar, cabin, stewards & butlers were all fantastic. The ship was clean at all times. We had room service a couple of times & it was very prompt, nicely presented & tasted delicious. There needs to be another option if you don't wish to go to the dining room for the evening meal though & there isn't one on this ship. We would not do another river cruise again due to the slowness of the cruise down the river, lack of entertainment/activities on board, lack of dining facilities, shortness of time at ports & too much time spent on the ship doing nothing, unavailability of using the sun deck. What we saw when we finally got on land was amazing & definitely needed more time to see more. For the amount of money we spent on this cruise we would have been better off using it for an ocean cruise & got more value for money. Very disappointed with the cruise in general but very happy with the things we actually got to see. Read Less

Celebrity Line is a top notch cruise experience. From the time one embarks the ship to the time you disembark things go smoothly. The dining venues are wonderful, and although we were Aqua class and ate in Blu most nights, I wouldn't hesitate to eat in other restaurants. Qsine was a special treat! The buffet was always well stocked and the quality was excellent. Mast Grill hamburgers can't be beaten! The staff on Celebrity Reflection are wonderful and attend to your every need...extra hangers - no problem; more chocolates at night - they will be there. Nothing was too much. My only criticism would be for the one tour that we booked with Celebrity. The guide was uninformed about our destination (Sigtuna), and did not provide us with a quality excursion. She was well informed about the second part of the day (Stockholm), but managed to run ahead of the group in her panic to get back to the bus. While we thoroughly enjoyed the actual places that day, we were extremely disappointed in the guide. Celebrity needs to ensure that the companies that are contracted to do tours are informed. All tours that we booked off the ship were excellent. I would expect the same of Celebrity. Regardless of the above criticism, this was a dream trip, and Celebrity made that happen. Thank you. I chose this cruise because several of our friends cruise Celebrity regularly and speak highly of it. This is my first cruise on this line. We usually book on Seabourn, but this ship had the itinerary we wanted at the time we were available to go, so we choose this cruise. One of my biggest gripes is the way they manage their suite class cabins. Other lines allow only three people per room, max. However, Celebrity has bunk beds in some of the rooms and a fold out sofa. So I assume you can pack the whole family (kids fares are deeply discounted) into a small suite and then you have access to Luminae, a restaurant exclusive to suite travelers. The kids carry on, some toddlers scream, and the parents often do nothing to quiet them. Misbehaving children have been a real problem for me on this cruise. So much so, I would not book again on Celebrity. Also, we bought the premium beverage package. If you drink spirits, premium spirits are available at most bars and restaurants, but I am a wine drinker. The wines I paid for with my premium beverage package are not available at most bars. If you give them advance notice, they will make an effort to accommodate you, but why should I have to bother with that? Some of the servers do not seem well oriented to the different types of wine. I ordered an after dinner glass of Zinfandel, which is what I had been drinking at dinner, at the bar. They brought me white Zinfandel. I tried to explain to the young waiter that there was a difference, but he never really got the message. So they are happy to sell you a premium beverage package, but you are likely going to be served white Zinfandel. There is a significant wait to get into Luminae, unless you go very early or very late. Most of the food is frozen, especially the seafood. I guess with this many people to feed, there is no way to do everything fresh. I understand it, but it is disappointing, none the less. Read Less

My husband and I were celebrating our 65th birthdays. This is our first river cruise. Our travel agent highly recommended AMA over any other river boat cruise. The ship, cabin, food, entertainment and service were outstanding. We particularly enjoyed the new "Wellness" program. Marcelo was an excellent fitness instructor. The shore excursions were very well planned. The local guides were excellent. We would have enjoyed all of the excursions. It would have been nice to spend more time in each port to enjoy more of their offerings. In general the time available for excursions (especially free time) was limited compared to time on the ship. In some ports, the docking locations made access to nearby cities/towns inaccessible. With regards to the staff there were some standouts. The Cruise Manager, Vanessa was delightful. She was very accommodating and approachable. Her Port Talks were very informative. We also enjoyed our Chef's Table Specialty Restaurant experience. In addition to the great food, the waitstaff made the dinner extra special. Alex, the Head Waiter was the perfect combination of charm, class and wit. The only dissapointment we experienced onboard was the coffee machine that dispensed instant coffee. We would have enjoyed freshly brewed coffee instead. Read Less

We had a good experience on a Viking Ocean Cruise and had not done a river cruise before. Viking gets high marks in that category, so we were excited to try it. However, we have been very disappointed. Our ship, The Embla, has been experiencing severe mechanical issues, that Viking was well aware of, prior to our boarding. In the interest of “the bottom line”, they didn’t disclose this, they put us on the ship anyhow. Our stateroom and all the others, had no air conditioning on our arrival and throughout the few days that we were kept on the ship (Tim sent you a photo of the thermostat in our cabin, showing 96F degrees ). We sailed, literally, across the river, and with no transparency, Viking strung us along in an ugly, smelly dockage for more than two and a half days. We could all, quite literally, give tours of Russe, for as much time as we spent there. The Embla finally sailed at 11 pm on the 3rd night, at a crawl, (less than 4 knots we figure), not making it even half way to our first port of Vidin. We were disembarked in Lom or Silistra, Bulgaria. We then had a bus trip complete with 11 and 12 hours on the bus with en mass bathroom breaks at malls and gas stations, (not fun when only 4 stalls and 5 buses worth of passengers) buffet lunches, hot sandwiches that were meant to be cold, and water on the bus only the first day. Our bus driver’s skills were questionable and our bus broke down. Excursions were abbreviated and virtually, all by bus or eliminated completely. They took us hours out of the way to make a brief lunch with locals in Croatia, that added at least 4 hours to our second day on the bus and added an unnecessary second border crossing, which took in excess of an hour in itself. We felt like going hours out of the way for 1 hour off the bus lunch, was probably an attempt by Viking to go through the motions of making it to Croatia. Read Less

We read many reviews and for our first river cruise experience, we decided AMA was the way to go. It was a bit more costly than Viking but I can tell you it was worth it. The food and the service was impeccable and there were only 150 guests on board opposed to Viking which I believe has over 190 on each boat of the same size. Nicola, the Cruise Director was a delight and very helpful and oh, so funny. We met some lovely people on our trip. We were only the fifth group of people on this new boat and it was gorgeous. So clean and roomy. The rooms were cleaned every morning and there was turn down service at night. You received the itinerary and schedule for the next day in your room while you were at dinner. The restaurant and hotel staff were incredible and all were very helpful and friendly. The wine pours are very generous. Happy hours feature a special drink of the day as well. We did book the Chef's table for dinner and it was lovely with excellent service. Small portions but it was 7 courses. I would highly recommend AMA Waterways and the AmaMora for your Rhine river cruise. Read Less

As regular Celebrity cruisers, this was our first time on the Reflection and loved it! After having booked a year in advance, as prices went down we upgraded from concierge mid ship to AQ forward if only to get to eat in Blu (more about that later). A brief rundown of things that are important to us. Dining We chose AQ for Blu which we have dined in on other ships. Our first night dining in Blu our group of 4 were seated in the front section and found the waiter a bit too high energy and the sommelier terrible. After that first night, we asked to sit in the back which is more quiet and we lucked out with Ivis our waitress and Madelina, our sommelier who were outstanding, warm and professional! Each dinner was terrific but we chose to eat at the buffet for breakfast a couple of times as the Blu breakfast menu really needs to change as it gets very boring. It's time to switch Blu breakfast up Celebrity! And its also time to improve desserts!! On our first night we took advantage of a Murano discount and had a fabulous meal. We also had the seafood tower at the Porch for lunch on our first day at sea (good thing as there were not other days at sea that were warm enough) We decided if AQ, on subsequent cruises is too expensive, we will choose a better cabin location and eat more in the speciality restaurants. Thanks to all staff who were always helpful in Gluten Free dining options for my husband and sister in law. They can however do a much better job in GF bread quality considering the huge choices available now. Entertainment and Activities The overall energy of this particular sailing was phenomenal. Guiseppe, the cruise director was by far the best cruise director we have ever had in any of our 12 cruises on Celebrity or any other ship. Having many of the ship "parties" in the central foyer resulted in a lot of participation including a few silent discos and an amazing Abba Sing A Long on the night we sailed away from Stockholm. Imagine 3 levels of the grand foyer all signing along, it was a blast. As far as the other entertainment, the Broadway selection was great, one of the comedians was fabulous and the other entertainment was eh. The bars had boring singers and Celebrity needs to step that up a bit. Bars and Café Bacio Clearly they are short staffed at the Martini Bar which, as usual was packed and often hard to find staff. As days at sea were pretty windy and cool, we stayed in the solarium for two days and found staff non existent and often no one around to take orders or clean up dirty dishes. Café Bacio had only two staff, one a hard working man and one a young woman who was downright rude when she made two mistakes (like forgetting one person's order) and rather than saying sorry, she decided to suggest it was our fault. Mmmm. But the coffee there is fantastic and we took lattes from there in the mornings for Blu as it was better. Ports This was a Baltic cruise which had a fantastic itinerary. I will not get into the details as these can be found on the Baltic boards but a few things. Avoid the Strommers Hop On Hop Off Bus at the Copenhagen port!!! They are the only HOHO at the port and run a terrible operation. Hope enough people complain to Celebrity. Not only were they not prepared for the masses, one bus broke down before it even left, then when our bus finally left, we were then told we needed to changes buses at the first stop. Well after at least 45 minutes, another bus showed up. This after we say 5!! other HOHO buses from another company come and go. Plan ahead and book any private tours. We used TJ in St Petersburg who were terrific and if you choose not to go into Berlin (we went 3 days early to spend time there) the local port is lovely and no need to go to Rostock. We found that Celebrity should have allowed full days to get the experience at each port as we felt rushed. Loved our cruise, no regrets, but next time we are in Europe, we will do it by land. The Reflection is a solidly-appointed, comfortable ship. It carries on the Celebrity tradition of quality service with professional and polite staffing. The cabin, at 194 sq ft was sufficiently large and comfortable. Dining is always a plus on Celebrity, and was again. The entertainment was fair to good; nothing special, really. The ports of the Baltic are very enticing, BUT; each port had 5-6-7 cruise ships in at one time. So, for 'premier stops' like St Petersburg, with everyone wanting to see the Peterhof Palace and the Hermitage, 'seeing' anything becomes a 'hit or miss' affair. Picture touring the rooms of these aforementioned places like taking a tour whilst moving around in a Rugby scrum! The crowds are UNBELIEVABLE. You get moved along from room to room on a 'timer' in the Peterhof. In the Hermitage we couldn't even GET INTO the room housing the Rembrandts! Also, I do not understand WHY people who are wheelchair-bound insist on coming on these types of cruises; there is NO handicapped accessibility to any of these places. I saw a man taken out of his wheelchair and was CARRIED UPSTAIRS while his wife CARRIED HIS WHEELCHAIR up the stairs. And how they maneuvered through these massive crowds is beyond me. CHOOSE A DIFFERENT ITINERARY! But the real 'ugly' in the title belongs to Celebrity itself. We used a travel agent and they bought a coordinated package for us including flights, the pre-cruise hotel, and transfers from/to the Amsterdam airport and into/out of the hotel. Well, we, two senior citizens, were to be met at the airport and to be transported to the hotel; well, NO ONE MET US. It was 90*, we had a total of 4 suitcases, and there was NO ONE to meet us OR to provide ANY guidance/help. We had to SEARCH the airport to scramble to get ANY transportation to the hotel. Then, as we had read many reviews of the high-cost and slow-performing internet on Celebrity, we decided to NOT make use of this service. BUT, as we HAD purchased our airline tickets through Celebrity we asked them to 'confirm us/check us in' with our homeward-bound flights---and all we were told was 'just buy one hour of internet time and do it yourselves'; I mean, REALLY?! THIS is 'end-to-end coordinated service'? And then, there was another scrum when the truck containing the departing passengers' luggage arrived AT THE SAME TIME as the busses w/the passengers--although the trucks had left TWO HOURS BEFORE the busses did! So, another 'scrum' took place as everyone scrambled to find their luggage. And THIS scrum was all courtesy of Celebrity. We have (HAD!) traveled with Celebrity several times over the past several years, but I think that this trip, overall, has made Celebrity 'persona non grata' with us going forward! Read Less

We booked on short notice. This one was available for the cruise location we were looking for, and had some spots available. First thing we looked for was "tipping included" and pretty much everything else was also included. Due to a lock door incident weeks prior, we were actually on the Emerald Destiny and not the Emerald Star -- a new ship in the fleet -- and it was amazing. Clean, fresh and new. The staff and crew were incredible -- always going above and beyond. Helpful, friendly and always smiling. The excursions were perfect. Just the right number. There was something new to do every day. Food was great. Lots of choice and the farewell dinner was unbelievably awesome. We knew ahead of time that there would be a large American group on board -- their group was SO FRIENDLY and it really added to the cohesiveness of the trip. Thank you, Parrot Heads! I have absolutely no criticisms of this trip or the crew or the touring company. Well done, Emerald. Read Less

Just a qualifier to start ... this is my first cruise, so I write this review lacking other benchmarks. I'm essentially rating and evaluating this cruise relative to other vacation experiences and the expectations from reading prior reviews. That said, I don't see how this experience could have been much better than it was. Here are some highlights. Dining with dietary needs: One of my sons was gluten-free and dairy free. We found the main dining room and the specialty restaurants (Canelatto, Pinnacle Grill) to be particularly confidence building in terms of how they handle allergies. This was true for both dinner and breakfast (we never happened to eat lunch in the MDR). My son generally pre-orded his dinner for the next day at a current days dinner and the chefs were able to prepare it according to his needs. Dive In and the NY Deli also handled special dietary needs well. The Lido Buffet was a little more chancy as nothing was labeled, so we rarely ate there. Dining quality and experience: I don't see how it could be much better. Food was delicious and served at appropriate temperature. Range of choices in MDR and specialty restaurants was excellent. Service was phenomenal. Ambiance in the 2nd floor MDR was solid -- even better at times when we got a seat by the window. One observation was that one needs to allow about 1 hour for breakfast and 1.5-2 hours for dinner. In other words, it's European dining speed. That was quite acceptable. I loved the fact that you could get food until midnight. Evening entertainment: The Music Walk (BB King, Rolling Stone Rock Room, Billboard Onboard) totally exceeded expectations. The Rock Room cover band was very good as was BB King (the bass player was phenomenal) and they hide quite a bit of variation from show to show and night to night. But the two pianists in Billboard Onboard stole the show. They were engaging, exceptionally talented, and quite entertaining. We chose Nieuw Statendam for their emphasis on music so we had high expectations. This surpassed them. Only nit might be that many shows were very crowded, but if you were willing to stand, you never missed a beat. Other observations: -- The appearance of the boat was spectacular. It still had that "new boat" smell. :-) -- I personally liked the walking path around the exterior of the boat on deck 3. One of my sons really liked the basketball court on deck 11. -- I liked the fact that the hot tubs were kept at about 100F. That means that you could relax and not have to worry about leaving and 15-20 minutes. -- They seemed to have very good judgment as to when to close the roof on the Lido pool and when to keep it open. -- Entry and exit on the boat at port was well organized. Some minor nits: -- Sometimes the wait at the Guest Services desk could be a bit long -- up to 15 minutes. -- I had a few times where I was trying to get information and got different answers from different people. For instance, I could never figure out what time the pool closed. -- The Navigator app was OK ... but it did not consistently notify me when I received a chat message. Read Less

We chose this cruise as it suited us and our friends date wise, number of days wise and places it visited. Having done 3 cruises on large ships (2 in the Caribbean and 1 to the Norway fjords) we were surprised how different it was. It was so relaxing watching the world go slowly by and you could barely notice the movement. Sea sickness doesn't happen on these cruises, yet you still visit other places from the same 'hotel' room. Our only downside was getting up early most days for trips, which started between 0815 and 0915. The cabin was spacious, the food great, the service wonderful and the staff so friendly. We enjoyed the violinist and opera singers - two separate entertainers on different days. The pool was lovely for cooling off in too, though rather small for swimming in. Our drinks package worked well and was far more economical. Being with around 170 passengers, you get to know more people on the cruise and a lot of the staff. We are already planning our next river cruise! Most people on the cruise were 60-75, like us. If you are younger and don't mind being in the minority then that is fine. Read Less

The service was excellent without being stuffy. They knew us by name the moment we stepped on!! The ports and tours were a perfect blend of activities that made us feel much more involved in the true culture of the towns. The age group on board was much older than us and quiet but our family enjoyed meeting and learning from others. However, more younger people on board would have been nice for our family especially in the evenings. We also would have loved more flexibility with meals particularly dinner. Maybe a serving time within a 90 min time frame would have allowed us some variability. Overall, Emerald exceeded our expectations and solidified our love for Emerald, river cruises and Europe. We can't wait to sail with Emerald again!!! Read Less

We where looking for a different idea for our holidays and went to a presentation for Emerald Waterways in Vancouver. We were impressed with the presentation and the all inclusive price no nickel and dimming you at very turn. So we took a brochure and a couple of weeks later booked the 8 day trip down the Rhine. We had an excellent trip, enjoyed all the off boat excursions. They were all very well organized with each days itinerary and map of the excursions. The guides where quiet knowledgeable and with the Quietvox system you could easily follow and hear your guide. Topping it off was the excellent food and service with lots of choices. I really liked the extra touch of the towels sculpture left at the end of the bed with the next day programme. We will be looking forward to another Emerald Waterways trip in 2020, somewhere ??? Had a great holiday and highly recommend Emerald Waterways. Read Less

Due to a lock closure, we were transferred from Jasper to Ruby from a deluxe balcony suite to a balcony suite. We found a cheque from Scenic on our return home without a covering letter and were disappointed with the amount since it was far smaller than the one received from Emerald (this was for a much smaller inconvenience caused by low water levels in 2015). The suite on the Jasper was very nice except for a tiny basin which made it difficult to shave without bumping into the shelf above the basin. The basin on the Ruby was far better in size. On this trip the gentle walkers should have been assigned to a coach before leaving the ship rather than trying to find the right group when all the coaches arrived at their destination on shore. At least one tour guide was unsympathetic to the "gentle" group and was more concerned in covering her tour at a normal pace. We hoped to see the horses in action at the Spanish riding school in Vienna but nobody told us the horses rest on Mondays even though we booked this option months ahead!! Other than the above, the excursions were very interesting, entertainment on board was very good (except for the pair from Vienna who did not perform much Viennese songs). The waltz lesson and the Sound of Music features were particularly very good. Great care was taken with respect to our diet which included a daily printout of what is allowed from the menu. In both ships, the cabin crew were first class. Disembarkation was very well organised. It would be better to include port charges in the price of a tour rather than be surprised at the time of booking about the extra cost. Read Less

We have a group of 12 friends which had taken the Danube cruise in 2015, and we wanted to have another memorable experience. And, indeed, this cruise was just that. We did the extension in Amsterdam, and that was amazing. So many interesting sights and unique adventures. The accommodation there was convenient, comfortable and beautiful. The Viking-provided walking tour was excellent. The Rhine cruise was a delight from start to finish. The crew were attentive and took care of our every need. They could not have been better. Food was great and the shore excursions with one exception were fabulous. I cannot say enough about how well George, our program director handled everything. In particular, he was so gracious when I got "lost" in Heidelberg and didn't make it back to the coach on time. Fortunately, we were able to communicate by mobile phone, and he held the bus for over twenty minutes, saving me a EU 200 cab ride. I was planning to show my appreciation with a generous gratuity supplement, but I was unclear on the procedure for that, and he was not available as we were rushing to disembark on the last morning in Basel. (Give George my sincere regards and thanks.) The only criticism of the cruise concerns the last excursion, into the Black Forest on June 6. The guide we had was excellent, and the scenery beautiful, but the main event I chose was the so-called coo-coo clock making demo. This in reality was a lengthy stop in a pricey souvenir shop. One of our group had opted for the "forest stroll", but that was so brief as to be unremarkable. I suspect there must be some other activity in the forest that would have made the 4-hour excursion more worthwhile. In summary, we all thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and the Amsterdam stay. It was another wonderful Viking adventure. We all look forward to being with your organization in the near future. Read Less

We wanted to see the Hermitage again so decided on this cruise as a good way to do that. It also allowed us to see most of the northern European capitals. Overall it was a great cruise with no major complaints so do not read too much into the minor problems we encountered. First the good news. We thought the food was very good in the main dining room even if some of the choices were less than inspiring. Biggest complaints were the covering on the beef wellington was soggy and the pasta with the shrimp scampi needed flavoring. One suitcase was delivered to our room with a wheel broken which they fixed in a day. (When we got back to the states it was missing completely and the airline replaced the whole thing). The ship is spotlessly clean and there are hand sanitizers everywhere. The staff was flawlessly friendly, even the customer service people. There was a wide variety of entertainment at night and I especially enjoyed the Four Season Tribute group. One last positive note is that we were surprised that the ships tours were about the same price as those from other companies. We did do a private tour from another company to get a full day at the Hermitage and Marina Wilson did a very good job giving us what we wanted. We had an oceanview cabin and really enjoyed the large window. We normally get a balcony but early June in northern Europe is just to cold to enjoy a balcony. Now for the few bad items. We were disappointed that the head waiter interrupted our first meal to push the special dinner show for $80. I am pretty sure he gets a commission for anyone that signs up but the intrusion was not appreciated. I had two small problems with the casino. They have special times where the 6:5 BJ table is a $3 minimum. I bet $3 and hit a Blackjack but they only paid me $3 instead of the almost correct $3.50 since they had $.50 chips on the table. When I pointed it out to the dealer he said the sign said that a $5 bet got paid $6. I pointed out that the sign said the table paid 6 to 5 and that I should get at least $3.50. It had no effect on the dealer. The other problem was the BJ tournament. The rules for the tournament clearly state that rebuys are $20 instead of the usual $25 fee. On the last day I wanted to do a rebuy and they said it was $25 and that the $20 rebuy was only good on the same day even though that is not what the rules state. As far as the cruise itself I thought that there were too many days at sea. I also don't understand why they do not visit Oslo instead of Skagen, Denmark. There is very little to see in Skagen and Oslo is not that far away. Several of the tours were less than inspiring (admittedly they are private contractors working for the cruise line). One tour did not offer headphones and it was hard to hear what the guide was saying sometimes. Another one was a 2 1/2 hour tour with no scheduled bathroom stops. After 6 people complained he finally made a special stop. Now for the ship itself. One of the biggest problems is what they call the Centrum. It is an open air area open to most of the 12 floors of the ship. They have chairs on each floor and frequent entertainment near the customer service desk. The problem is the noise is almost unbearable. There are also very few places where you can find a quiet space. The best two are the Starquest area on the 13th floor (when it is available) and the far rear of the ship on floor 6 (when they are not having special events in the area). I was a little disappointed in the fact that quite a few of the windows are fogged up due to bad seals. It would not take a lot of effort to replace those. Also the seats in the cinema are very worn out and it is hard to sit on some of them for a 2 hour movie. And lastly, the hot water in the shower was too hot. There was no way to take a "cool" shower since your choice was hot or hotter. Again keep in mind that most of these complaints are very minor compared to the overall pleasure we had on this cruise. we traveled per recommendation of a friend. It was an excellent cruise except that there were too many old and inactive guests.Amenities were nice,,service was excellent and the staff were very friendly and courteous. The restaurant was adequate and the food was always fresh and well prepared. The band was very good but most people would disappear soon after dinner. I guess to bed. The excursions were well organized and guides were knowledgeable. The arrival in Amsterdam was well arranged. The limo driver was very nice.We were met by the staff at the port and were taken to our cabin with no delay.Every thing was explained about the set up and services. The cabins were cleaned and made up very quickly.Going through the locks and dams was very interesting specially those during the night. The departure was also well organized and the staff were very helpful to guide every one to their destination. Overall it was worth the time and money. It is highly recommended. Read Less

We are avid ocean cruisers and this was our second River Cruise, both on Avalon. The overall experience was fantastic again, with the condition of the ship, the service and the food meeting our expectations. As it turned out, we had the same cruise director (Yeah Valintin!!) as our first cruise and he was, again wonderful in delivering a great week going down the Rhine River. It was so easy getting on and off the boat whenever we wanted to. The wait staff were great, both good service and friendly interaction throughout our week with them. The ports were interesting and Avalon had the excursions extremely well organized with both buses and boats revved and waiting to take us to interesting places. The day we sailed through the Rhine Gorge, our cruise director narrated the experience pointing out the castles and providing context and historic background. Our cabin was on the top deck (category "P") and was extremely comfortable, with a well sized and well appointed bathroom with glass enclosed shower. It is hard to find fault with any aspect of the experience, with maybe a wish for a bit more diversity on food selections at dinner. However, their standard every night steak, chicken or fish options were well prepared if the regular nightly menu didn't meet our tastes. I'm not sure how much difference there is between some of the River Cruise lines (AMA, Uniworld etc) but I am more than pleased with our experiences on Avalon and will book with them again for our next River cruise.
