Had only been to Portland, Maine before and wanted to see more of Maine. Had book a cabin on the lower deck, but when I arrived because of the lesser number of passsengers I was upgraded to the third deck with a private balcony. Everything was great. A great chef who came out and visited every table at every meal to see how people like the food and if they had any complaints. Was willing to fix something special for you if they had the capability. All of the staff were friendly and extremely helpful. Interesting shore excursions were offered at each port. The cruise included an old fashion lobster bake on shore. The cabin was just the right size and was cleaned each day. The ship was easy to get around. A great cocktail hour each day before dinner was served. Wine and beer always available for each meal. Had some type of entertainment each night. This was my first cruise every and I selected it because of its small passenger size. Have already booked another one for 2017. Read Less

Best experience anyone could imagine unless their are more hours in a day. Staterooms, bath, and balcony were exactly as advertised with room to share for two. Ideal to be able to listen (or not) to river historian on ship radio broadcast from lounge while lounging on balcony and watching the river sites. Locally sourced meals were prepared by top notch chefs and served to high standards. Excursions on time and high quality. Guides except for one who was ill were excellent and from the location; their knowledge was presented with humor and candor. All needs seemed to be provided for disabled folks routinely with gentle care. Crew was professional, well trained, and passenger service centered, always happy and friendly. High river level never interfered with our itenerary since Captain adjusted sailing times to fit without compromising any activities. Sailing was smooth and seemed effortless. This cruise was a pleasant surprise. The critics, we felt, were harsh and not very fair. Yes the rooms were small and it was pricey but there were many positives which outweighed the negatives. The food was unbelievable not only for a ship but for any restaurant. It was always timely and delicious. Healthy and with options for each meal. The staff, mostly students, were unbelievably pleasant; competent and very hard workers. The Captain was pleasant; approachable and kept us safe at all times. Other staff members like Jess and Ian were so dedicated and helpful. Made you feel right at home. Entertainment was nightly and varied. Happy hour, which was also nightly, was a special treat. Admittedly, we read the criticisms prior to leaving. We were wondering if we had made the right decision. You have to experience it to realize that it is a warm and friendly group. Yes the rooms are small but put the luggage under the beds; be organized and don't bring that much. Room temperature controls were not a problem. We had a wonderful experience. Read Less

This was our very first cruise. We met many people who had many trips under their belt and listened to their tips and information. Our stateroom was fantastic and the balcony was so great day and night. I am a birdwatcher and saw many I recognized a few I didn't. Mark Twain onboard was a delight and also Mr.Marking and his many talents he shared with us. The food every day was fit for a king (and queen) and we got to choose every meal what we wanted which was so fun. We are definitely looking forward to our next cruise on ACL. Great job crew everyone was so good to us. I enjoyed just relaxing and listening to Mark Twain the most. My husband like Mr.Marking and his many singing styles and performances. We played bingo and I attended the Fur,Fin and Flora talk. The service was astounding. I had the co-director help me get tickets for the bus home online..which was so great. My overall opinion of the ship and cruise is just wonderful would not know what I could improve on!!! Read Less

This was our first cruise with ACL. It was wonderful! I enjoyed our cabin-with a view of the coast of Maine. It was just stunning. Watching Maine go by with the lighthouses was like being in a movie. In fact, the city of Bath was used in a movie. Entertainment was just my speed. Not to slow and not to fast and loud. Enjoyed the first night with the trumpet & guitar player. Their music was easy to listen too. The next night a lady with a drummer came on board. She help to lead us through the history of Broadway. Songs and stories where a highlight of her entertainment. The Lobster man was interesting, but he could leave out that he is divorced and what he pays for his ex to live on. The banjo player made magic come out of banjo! He was incredible! My husband loved eating lobster once, twice, three times a day sometimes. I enjoyed the view from the dining room plus the food. Yes, my clothes are a bit snug this week after all the wonderful food from last week. Service on board was good. When there was something we needed, it was taken care of in a timely manner. Loved being on the ship. Watching the fireworks for the 4th off the coast was nice. First time I had a sweater on to watch the event. Wish we could of been a bit closer, but the weather was wonderful and the view was good. Read Less

First time cruising of any type. Picked a small ship since we didn't want to be over whelmed with people. Mostly had a great time. Met some great fellow cruisers, and some excellent dedicated staff. Cabin steward/wait-staff were great. Didn't mind having to come back to clean the room when we slept in, very well informed about the food, which was excellent throughout the trip. Due o our mobility issues (not wheelchair) we couldn't disembark at Oak Alley. Had a minor scare at Baton Rouge hen my wife fell and skinned her knee. Crew and staff, from the captain on down, very responsive and offered to provide medical attention, which we declined. An icepack and rest fixed the problem. No problems after that, but disembarking/re-embarking at the remaining ports was a little difficult, primarily due to the levies on the Mississippi River. Dining is single seating which is great!. Met different people each meal. Tried to explain the American election system, and American gun laws to people from Australia and New Zealand. Didn't succeed, but it was fun. Recommend the trip to anyone wanting s leisurely trip, doing just what you want to. We are cruising with ACL again, but a different voyage. Read Less

Service excellent and correct and always with a small and friendly attitude. Special request handled without any question or push back. Shore excursions good, if difficult to access due to the configuration of the river banks. Lovely looking boat but that was all. Boarded with another 150 on tour - all from overseas - All English speaking - most if not all very disappointed. Meals were often served cold and tasteless. Took sometimes 1 hour before meal was served and sometimes the delay was because orders had got misplaced - chaos happening in kitchen. Often items very not available or substituted without explanation. Despite having to order your menu your choices the day before they still ran short. People with dietary issues - I.e coeliac - had problems each meal time. Drinks - beer wine - were often served warm - glassware was often warm or cloudy!!! Accommodation very ordinary, some people reported mouldy shower curtains, bathrooms in need of a good scrub and stained carpets, others said towels were not replaced or supplies like toilet paper. We we squeezed into a single room despite having paid for an upgrade and were put right next the paddle wheel - thus no sleep due to the noise when boat was sailing overnight. Woke up to ants covering pillows one morning. One night 2 floors kept awake all night with a screeching noise coming through the PA - none of the crew could be found or responded to phone calls - apparently the crew were not affected and divert phones to voicemail at night. - a serious safety issue I would have thought! Public areas furniture looking vary tired - having been launched in 2012 - has had a very hard time. Laundry facilities shared with crew and down to one washer and dryer for the whole boat. Crew very friendly but very young and inexperienced - one moment they were serving you food , next they were out preparing food in the kitchen and by the time you finished they were cleaning your bathroom and making your bed. Entertainment was ok - the staff responsible were very dedicated. Side tours at ports were a mixed bag - some excellent others were poorly organised, not enough time or had no purpose. Got the impression from tour leader that management were not prepared to listen to complaints and our experience was not uncommon. Read Less

Overall we had a wonderful time. Accommodations were great, food was plentiful, flavorful, good choices and very good. Tours, for the most part were excellent. As with everything, a couple could have been better, but overall very good. Entertainment on board was adequate. Banjo player Dan Knowles was excellent! With seven days of tours and entertainment, you will always like some better then others. Doesn't mean that they weren't good, just different tastes for different folks. What we may have thought was just okay, others thought was excellent. Daily choices for tours were great. Something for everyone and they kept you busy every day. Staff members were always cheerful, accommodating and efficient. With the smaller size ship (about 150 people), you never had to wait for anything and got to meet a great deal of the folks on board. We totally enjoyed sitting with different people at dinner and sometimes were able to seek out people that we had enjoyed other nights. All tours were very well organized and we never felt rushed or had to wait for anything. We totally enjoyed ourselves and even signed up for another cruise while on board. Would highly recommend this cruise. The Mississippi River is awesome. Take an extra day at either end to explore both New Orleans and Memphis like we did as they both have a lot to offer and are fun cities. Forgot to mention that the majority of the passengers are the over 60 crowd. Read Less

Had a great week traveling up the lower Mississippi. The cabin was large with plenty of room around the queen size bed. Every member of the crew was great. Don't know how they do so well considering they are changed out every 3 months. Would do anything they could to make the cruise great. Food and entertainment were great, too much food. Booked a second trip before we got off the boat and are selecting a third cruise to book while on the next trip. Side tours were excellent, well planned. Traveled to New Orleans a few days early and would recommend doing so. Hotel suggested by ACL was great. The crew was the best part of the experience. Great people. Read Less

We toured the islands in RI. Shore excursions were awesome. Loved having the young students as servers as they were fun, polite, helpful and gracious. Food and anything you wanted for food or drinks met any requests. Jaene, cruise director fun outgoing, helpful and talked w' all and made them feel that she was happy they were sailing! Davenna, activity director was helpful, cute, knew every ones names and needs. Harold, the entertainer was so informed and all liked his AM walks. I thought that there needed to be safes in the rooms & phones & ice buckets....was told after the fact I could request safe & ice buckets. Dinning room centerpieces needed to be updated!!!! Glass mason jars filled w' sand and shells did not meet the expectations that I felt the cruise line wanted to present. They looked "cheap". We did our own table decorations nightly as we had a different theme each nite and ALL of the cruise staff, help staff and other people sailing came by to comment how much they liked it. I think the cruise people could have 1 or 2 nites that people could join in if they wanted like a western nite and have a BBQ where you walked thru ~ just thinking out of the box. Feel free to call if you'd like more information. All in all it was excellent and ready for our next cruise to the Hudson in 10/2015! We will bring our own table decorations again as we enjoy making it fun and festive!! PS~ loved the fresh baked cookies daily :)! Also enjoyed options for breakfast time along w' the early bird one at 6:30 AM. Read Less

This cruise exceeded all our expectations. The only negative is that the cabins were much smaller than advertised though still ample. The balconies were small and not private being shared with two other cabins. Nonetheless, the efficiency and personal touches of the cruise lines was evident in the reception, tours, social hours, evening programs, and especially the meals. I told the chef personally that we had a wonderful epicurean experience that happened to occur on a cruise. The cleaning and wait staff were personable, intelligent and hardworking attesting the thorough hiring criteria of the company. Most had college degrees or were college students and easily interacted with the passengers, most of whom were retired professionals. We were so pleased we booked another cruise next year. Read Less

I have read some of the less than satisfactory reviews of the Queen of the Mississippi and felt compelled to comment. I thought is was a wonderful trip and I am seriously considering another cruise with the line as soon as possible. I booked a single cabin from Memphis to New Orleans from March 28th thru April 6th. I found the ship to be spotlessly clean. My cabin was comfortably large and clean and comfortable as well. The bath room, while not huge, was more than adequate - excellent water pressure, nice high shower head and HOT water. The closet was very small but I had 9 large drawers for all my clothing. My only dislike was that the bed was a full-sized twin bed. The room was plenty big enough to have a full-sized double bed. That was the only dissatisfaction I had with the entire trip! I found the food - every bit of it was delicious, fresh and beautifully prepared. In fact, I found the food better than the food of the large ship cruises I have been on. Was this trip more expensive than the large ships I have been on - yes, but I did not spend one dime on drinks - beer, wine, call brand cocktails were all included. Now, the real prize of the trip - the staff. From the Captain to the deck hands and Toots (the riverlorian) these people were professional, kind, HARD WORKING, and very engaged with all the passengers. Each of these fine people were proud of the job they were doing and it showed. I truly enjoyed this trip.   Read Less

This was our first cruise. We traveled from Juneau, Alaska to Seattle, Washington. Group included myself, daughter, son-in-law and 19 yr old grand daughter. Majority of the travelers were between ages of 40 to 80+ but grand daughter was ok with that. Both staterooms were very nice although small but we were not in there for long periods of time. The entire ship was very nice and clean. Crew members were very friendly and helpful. Our on board naturalist Todd Weber was amazing! He has been doing tours for about 20 years and is very knowledgable about the area. If you are a history buff this is a good cruise for you. All of our shore excursions for town tours, museums etc were included in cruise price. At each port there were locals who came on board to perform music or give short talks about local history. We also had free time at the ports to shop or wander around the town. The meals on board were excellent! Each evening the cocktail hour was interesting with different appetizers and all drinks were complimentary. Breakfast consisted of fruits, cereals, etc as well as ordered hot foods. Each morning you had a menu for lunch and dinner so you could select what you wanted. Because of the region we were in there was a lot of seafood. We became tired of seafood 2 times a day but were able to order hamburgers, spaghetti etc. Before we arrived in Seattle we completed forms indicating times for transportation to airports or hotels. The crew members were very efficient in getting every one where they needed to go at the proper time. One traveler had to leave for airport at 4:00 am! We have already reserved out next cruises although we will not be traveling as the same group. We have decided we do not want to be on one of the large cruise ships unless we have to cross the ocean! Since we intentionally choose small we were not looking for Casinos or extravaganzas. We got a cruise that can be compared to cruising on a friends yacht with about 90 of her dear friends. The ship was spotless. The cleaning never stopped. Our room was quite comfortable. The king size bed was more comfortable than our bed at home (hate to say it) and the sheets were sooo soft. Nice closet and spacious bath for a boat. Room was also spotless and was kept that way despite us. Liz the activities manager is the most cheerful, helpful individual I have ever met. She is a treasure of the seas. I don't think she sleeps. She is always looking for ways to make the Cruise more enjoyable. Sapelo Island and the Shrimp boat were my two favorites although all were fun. Sandy our historian was the best and most fun. She could double for entertainment. She prepared us as best she could. She made the excursions and stops more enjoyable by sharing the stories and culture. More than that she also was always there to help or explain. Gerardo is a Peach of a restaurant manager. He did does everything he can to provide beverages around the clock, treats around the clock, cookie parties, cocktail parties. The Chef offered good selections of local food. The salads were special no two looked or tasted the same. The food was beautifully plated and we found the selections offered a good variety of food that should satisfy anyone. Wine selections were also surprisingly good. Staff did their best to make us happy. Enjoyed the new napkin fold each night. The evening entertainment was a welcome surprise. We enjoyed each night and in particular our favorite was Christopher Paul. We did not expect any entertainment as the boat was small and we were in port each night. The Captain met and greeted but best of all he gave a great ride. We enjoyed our trip to the bridge. Dock guy John was also helpful in making sure we didn't hit our heads and got all the help we needed. If I missed anyone I am sorry because it took all of you to make our first cruise so good that we will go on another. It will be another on this cruise line. Had a wonderful Thanksgiving/ Read Less

All I can say is WOW! My husband and I took our first 7 day cruise along the southern part of the Eastern shore of the United States. We left from Jacksonville, Florida. We were greeted on the ship by a friendly, warm staff, served a delicious, meet and greet lunch, afterwards we settled into our cabins and a little later on the staff had a Tour Briefing in one of the scenic lounges, which included an introduction to the historian who would be traveling with us from port to port. During the week we visited six ports; each port had different excursions available. You had several choices at many of the ports. The excursions my husband and I took were informative and fun. We especially enjoyed Savannah, Ga. and Charleston, SC. We plan to go back to Charleston in the near future. The people on the ship were lovely, and during the week you got the opportunity to dine with almost everyone. Cocktail hour was also a great time to meet fellow travelers. Delicious appetizers and your choice of cocktails were provided each evening. This was followed by amazing dinners. Each night offered different menu choices which you selected at breakfast each day. Light lunches were also available every day if you choose to partake. Entertainment was provided each evening. The entertainment ranged from a husband and wife band, movies, lectures or demonstrations by local artists. A few minor incidents, such as non-flushing toilets, were immediately repaired. The staff was attentive and very willing to please. It is a cruise I highly recommend. It provides an opportunity to see the Eastern shore under the relaxed guidance of a beautiful ship, a great captain and staff while relaxing and taking in the sights. Thanks!!! Read Less
